Santa Maria in Aracoeli was built on the site of the ancient Temple of Juno Moneta, and its foundations date back to at least the 6th century. The current structure primarily reflects Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, with significant additions made in the 13th century by the Franciscan order.

The church’s facade is relatively simple and was never completed according to the original design. It features a large staircase with 124 steps, which were added in the 14th century to commemorate the end of the plague in Rome.

The interior is characterized by a high, coffered wooden ceiling and three naves separated by ancient columns, many of which were taken from Roman temples.

Santa Maria in Aracoeli houses a remarkable collection of frescoes and artworks. Among the most notable are the frescoes by Pinturicchio in the Bufalini Chapel, depicting scenes from the life of St. Bernardino of Siena

One of the church’s most cherished relics is the Santo Bambino di Aracoeli, a wooden statue of the Holy Child (Baby Jesus), believed to have miraculous powers. It is traditionally displayed at Christmas.

Santa Maria in Aracoeli has played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of Rome. It has hosted many important events, including the coronation of emperors and significant religious ceremonies. The basilica’s strategic location and historical importance make it a must-visit site for those interested in Rome’s rich heritage.
